Shorty was one of the original residents of Slim Shack! Shorty came from a 3 time world champion team roper as a heel horse, but after spending years with Artemio they have accomplished so much more than just that! Together they have gone on thousands of miles of trail riding, tried their hand at both barrel racing and team sorting, carried the American flag for a hometown rodeo, worked in the branding pen, and most impressively become a team that can both head and heel a steer. This duo has seen it all!

Tex was the other original residents of Slim Shack! Tex came from the Bachs in Mount Vernon Texas and was Joe’s first ever horse. Together they have accomplished great things! Going to numerous ropings, winning money and buckles, attending brandings, and participating in numerous other rodeo events! Joe and Tex are inseparable and although Tex is getting up there in age he will always be apart of Slim Shack Ranch, living out his best days on green pastures!

Chapo was one of our most athletic horses with a big motor. He loved working, and playing !! Roping, sorting, barrels, pole bending, Chapo wanted to do it all !! An adventurous trail rider on top of everything else. Chapo had a hard time standing still. Unfortunately he had a rare physical condition that took his life at an early age. He loved life and WE LOVED HIM. He is missed everyday …..❤️❤️

Tommy is the horse that Joe got to give Tex a break from going on trail rides as he got older. Tommy has mostly been used for long rides out in the hills but he really is the all round type of guy who is willing to try anything! We have used him for team roping, gathering, branding, team sorting, and even some barrel racing! Tommy is a huge love bug, be careful if you go in his pen he will make sure you have no choice but to give him some pets.

Remi is the first horse that Claire has ever owned. She bought him as a trail horse and together they have learned it all – barrel racing, working cows, and even team roping as a heeler. Their favorite thing to do together is go out on all day rides and haul out to barrel races. In 2025 this duo started seeing all their hard work pay off when they started pulling in some checks, but they still have their eyes set on a buckle one day!

Spitfire (AKA Spitty) is Claire’s second horse. He has a long past history of team roping, and has even won over $30,000 in his lifetime! Claire got him in his older years so that she could learn to rope on a reliable “been there-done that” type of horse. He is living out his life on the green pasture with our little herd.

Junior is Joe’s newest horse, we noticed that Tex’s old age was starting to catch up with him and in an effort to give him the retirement he deserves Joe started looking for a horse that could fill the role of his team roping partner. After looking at multiple horses and not finding just the right one, Tex Jr. (who was just Tex at the time) showed up. Joe didn’t know what his name was until after riding him and liking him, the icing on the cake was when we asked his name and they said “Tex”! We knew that was the sign we needed! Now, just to make things easier he is known as “Junior”. We are excited to see what Joe and Junior will accomplish together!

Ruby is the only mare that we own! She has a cuddly and loving personality. She will eat anything you let her, and she is one of the bravest horses we own. Together this team has begun barrel racing for fun at hometown rodeos, and she is currently in training learning to be a heel horse. We believe she will be out competing, and winning, in no time!

Nemo is Claire’s newest horse! She got him because as she has gotten more serious about competing in both barrel racing and team roping we noticed the toll it was taking on Remi, so Nemo is here to ease the workload! Originally he was started as a rope horse but after a few months of owning him we noticed a potential for barrel racing as well so the training has started! He even managed to pull a check at his first race ever! After a little scuffle with Shorty the two decided that Nemo would take the role of second in command in the herd and he has fit in perfectly ever since!
